Trash, Art, And The Movies Podcast #10: Falling On Our Heads

Heather Noel came up with the idea for this week's Trash, Art, and the Movies pairing: wouldn't it be perfect, she asked, to pit Shohei Imamura's 1989 Hiroshima drama Black Rain against Ridley Scott's fish-out-of-water, cop-on-the-edge thriller of the same name (and release year)?

I didn't disagree, and the discussion that followed turned out to be really lively—not only was it more interesting to talk about the Ridley Scott movie in 2012, with the benefit of 25 years of hindsight, but I also was very grateful for the opportunity to watch Imamura's Black Rain, a haunting, deeply disturbing and emotional drama that I probably never would have gotten around to otherwise. Seriously, guys—the Hiroshima sequences in this movie contain some of the most nightmarish images and tableaux I've ever experienced. This is hell-on-earth filmmaking of the highest order. I've probably given away which movie wins the week, but don't let that keep you from giving this episode a listen. Why, it's only one click away! (Here's the iTunes link as well, if you'd rather subscribe to the show that way.)
